VIEJITO MASKIn the dance of the
viejito, dancers dress as old men and begin
the dance slowly, then symbolically cast off the aches of old age and
dance as fast as they can! The dance of the
viejito is performed at holidays and special events all over the state of Michoacan. These gorgeous hand-carved and hand-painted
viejito masks come from the workshop of master mask maker Felipe Horta. Each measures 8 by 9 inches, wood.
Master mask-maker Felipe Horta has traveled the world demonstrating his art. We were fortunate to catch him at his workshop in Tocuaro and see a mask take shape before our eyes. Mr. Horta has made masks for theatrical productions and ballet folklorico, and his work is in many collections. Please visit his Web site, www.felipehorta.com, if you would like more information about his public appearances.
