Do Your Students Struggle with the Difference Between ser and estar?
Give Clues to Help Remember!
Sometimes using mnemonic devices for the most complicated grammar really can make a difference. It is amazing how they work. At the very least, mnemonic devices give students the confidence they need, if not the clarity in how to use ser vs. estar. Personally, I have taught ser separately, when teaching about how to say where one is from and how to describe one’s appearance and personality. When I teach when to use estar I use locations around town and conditions representing physical and emotional feelings. These posters help when you are trying to give students a real sense of what each verb means.

These posters are useful because not only is it a mnemonic device, it also provides a clear explanation of when to use the word.

I made these posters for teachers, using the explanations that have worked for me as I taught Spanish 1 for 11 years. I hope they help you, too! Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org to let me know if they have helped you and how they could be improved.
