A: Hello Renee,
In a CI classroom, students are expected to be receptive to the input being provided. The teacher is a facilitator that provides all the necessary ingredients for language acquisition, but the students need to do their part by making their best effort to "tune in" to it. The idea is that what needs to happen in the classroom is a collaborative effort, "a two-way street" in which everyone has a valuable role to play. (It doesn't mean "make only a 50% effort," but rather that half of the responsibility is the teacher's to provide what the student needs, and the other half is the student's, to show up to class and take it in.) For a more detailed explanation, see 1B4866 The Big CI Book or 1B6377 Year One, also by Ben Slavic. Thank you for taking the time to ask this excellent question!
