A: Hello,
Thank you for your questions. Each DBQ book is divided into themed units. Each unit has four to six documents to read and analyze. Depending on the document chosen to read, it may take a class period or you may be able to complete the entire unit in a class. For example, there are articles and short stories that may take longer for a student to read, but each unit also includes a political cartoon/artwork that may only take a few minutes for students to review and discuss the questions about meaning and connection to the studied work.
Each DBQ book provides a fairly detailed synopsis of the studied work and a listing with descriptions of major characters. This may allow a teacher to use the units without prereading, but for students to gain the most meaning from the DBQs they should have read or be reading the book. The DBQ units lend themselves for use alongside the actual reading of the novel to help students deepen their understanding of the work.
